Overview
How the app works
PDF and Word Document Import for Confluence turns PDF and Microsoft Word (.docx) files into native Confluence Cloud pages. You upload one or more documents from inside a Confluence space, the app extracts the text and structure of each document, and it creates a Confluence page holding that content, ready to edit like any other page.
Each file is converted as its own background job, so you can upload several documents at once and watch each one progress independently. Extraction uses Microsoft Azure AI Document Intelligence. Your documents are held only for as long as the conversion takes and are deleted from systems controlled by Intranel in less than one hour; the Security Policy sets out how that works.
Conversion is automated, so results vary with the quality and complexity of the source document. Review an imported page before you rely on it or share it.
Features
Key features
- Works inside Confluence. The app runs in the space you are already working in. There is no separate portal to log into.
- Bulk upload. Select several documents at once and each becomes its own import job.
- Editable output. Content is rebuilt as native Confluence content you can edit, comment on, and search, rather than an attached file or a flat image.
- Live job list. Every import shows its file name, creation time, and current status, refreshed on demand.
- One-click open. A finished job links straight to the page it created.
- Tidy failure handling. Deleting a failed job also removes the temporary draft page it left behind.
- Built on Atlassian Forge. The app runs on Atlassian-managed infrastructure and we keep no archive of your documents.
Setup
Installing the app
- In Confluence, open Apps in the top navigation and choose Explore more apps. Installing an app requires Confluence site administrator permission.
- Search the Atlassian Marketplace for PDF and Word Document Import for Confluence and install it on your site.
- Open the Confluence space you want to import documents into. You need permission to create pages in that space.
- In the left sidebar, find the Space apps section and click PDF and Word Document Import. The app opens on its own page.
Usage
Importing a document
- Open the app from the Space apps section in the left sidebar of your Confluence space, under PDF and Word Document Import. The app page displays a list of your past import jobs under Import Jobs, showing the file name, creation time, and status.
- Click Upload Document(s) to select and upload one or more PDF or Microsoft Word (.docx) files for import.
- Once your files are selected, each one appears in the list with a progress indicator. As the import proceeds, the status updates to reflect the current stage of processing, such as uploading, analyzing, and importing.
- Use the refresh button, the circular arrow icon beside Upload Document(s), at any time to reload the latest list of import jobs.
When an import finishes
When processing finishes successfully, the job status changes to Done and two action buttons become available on the row:
- Open takes you directly to the newly imported page.
- Delete removes the job from the list. It does not delete the imported page itself.
If an import fails
If an error occurs during import, the status is displayed as Error in red. The same two action buttons are available, but Delete behaves differently here: as well as removing the job from the list, it removes the temporary draft page that was created during the failed import.
Testing
Verifying the app works
These steps confirm the app is installed and working correctly. A short PDF or Microsoft Word (.docx) file containing a few headings and a table makes a good test document.
- Confirm PDF and Word Document Import appears under Space apps in the left sidebar of your space, and open it.
- Confirm the app page loads with the Import Jobs panel, an Upload Document(s) button, a refresh button, and a job list. With no previous imports, the list reads No import jobs.
- Click Upload Document(s) and select a PDF or Microsoft Word (.docx) file.
- Confirm the file appears in the list with its file name, a creation time, and a status with a progress indicator beside it.
- Wait for processing to finish. Confirm the status moves through the processing stages and settles on Done.
- Confirm the open and delete buttons have appeared on that row.
- Click open. Confirm you land on a new Confluence page in the same space containing the converted content of your source document.
- Confirm the new page also appears in the space content tree in the left sidebar.
- Return to the app and click the refresh button. Confirm the list reloads and the completed job is still listed.
- Click delete on the job. Confirm the job disappears from the list and that the imported Confluence page still exists.
To check the failure path, upload a file that cannot be processed, such as a corrupt or password-protected PDF. Confirm the status shows Error in red, and that deleting that job removes both the job and the temporary draft page created during the failed import.
Usage limits
Two limits apply so that processing stays responsive for everyone:
- 500 pages per month across all imports on your site.
- 50 MB per file for any single document you upload.
If you need to bring in more than that, ask us using the form below and we can look at raising your limit temporarily.
